Spotlighting Talent: How A Community Art Show Can Boost Seniors’ Self-Esteem while promoting a sense of community at large.

Not all must-see art exhibitions are set in exclusive galleries and museums – sometimes,
The best shows pop up where the artists live, gather, and create together!

Showcasing the works of the talented seniors they serve, Artfully Aging has organized and executed community art displays and/or artists receptions for several Senior Living communities in the St. Louis region. Not only are these exhibits a highlight of an organization's arts programming, but they are also a source of confidence for presenting artists.

According to the American Psychological Association, an older adult’s self-esteemdeclines sharply around the time of retirement. However, pursuing new creative hobbies, such as Artfully Aging’s watercolor art program for seniors, provides an outlet for self expression, a renewed sense of purpose, and a greater sense of control. Their rediscovered confidence only grows when those around them celebrate their skills.

How to organize and execute a senior art display or art show in your community

Whether you're creating a simple art display or hosting a senior art show event, either will help to foster a greater sense of self-worth and accomplishment in the seniors you serve while promoting a sense of community at large.

Easy steps to creating an effective art display

  • Throughout the course of the art sessions, the art facilitator will accumulate a collection of signed watercolor art projects to exhibit.
  • Using a large black foam core board and clear push pins the facilitator will arrange artwork on the boards, adhering each piece with a push pin in every corner.
  • Descriptive signage will need to be created for the top of the board.
  • Now you need an easel for your board and a high-traffic area in which to display it for visitors and both current and future community members to see.

Easy steps to creating a memorable art show event

Organizing a successful art show event is easy. The class facilitator, along with the help of the artists and staff can work side-by-side to design an unforgettable exhibit:

  • By following the steps spelled out above, each individual artist will now create their own display board accordingly. An easel will be needed for each board as well as signage for each.
  • Select a location within your community or organization that will accommodate multiple displays (boards with easels) with room for attendees to mingle about. Freestanding displays remove the hassle of hanging artwork on walls.
  • Decide on a date and time for your artists reception. Consider refreshments to be served and how to invite friends and family to your event.

What starts as a watercolor session for a few seniors can turn into a cultural event for the entire community. For the artists, being recognized for their talents instills in them a great sense of pride and purpose.

Elevating your Artfully Aging watercolor program with a community art exhibition sparks joy for seniors and motivates others to discover their own inner artists. With a few display boards and lots of positive encouragement, you turn any space into an inspiring art gallery for all the seniors in your community!
